Solid Adsorption Processes

Solid adsorption is a common method for treating industrial wastewater. It effectively removes both organic and inorganic pollutants using solid materials that capture contaminants.

In this process, contaminants adhere to the surface of solid media placed in either fixed or fluidised beds. Depending on the material type, it is either reused or discarded after treatment. Among the most widely used adsorbents are granular activated carbon and ion exchange resins.

These systems are simple to construct and have relatively low setup costs. However, maintenance can be expensive, particularly when the media cannot be regenerated. Another challenge is the production of secondary waste, such as exhausted solid material or wastewater containing concentrated pollutants from the regeneration process.

Given these considerations, solid adsorption is best suited for lightly contaminated water. It also functions well as a final polishing step following chemical, biological, or physical treatment methods.

Ion Exchange (IEX)

Ion exchange replaces unwanted ions in water with safer ones attached to resin beads. This method is especially effective in removing calcium, magnesium, and heavy metals.

There are two common resin types: cationic and anionic. These are widely used in household systems and industrial settings to soften water and enhance overall quality.

The choice of adsorbent depends on the specific contaminants and treatment goals. Every material has a finite capacity, requiring replacement or regeneration once saturated.

To maintain efficiency and ensure safe water treatment, operators must conduct regular system checks and follow a scheduled maintenance routine.
